Welcome, Marilyn! |
The one thing you can count on in life is change. Change of seasons, changes at work, changes at home. Few things stay the same. Change is often good, as Helen Keller said "When one door of happiness closes, another opens".
A significant change that has recently taken place is the appointment of a new Economic Development Officer. Marilyn Hutchinson has been leading the City of Nanaimo's Economic Development Office.
Marilyn is no stranger to economic development. She has sat on the EDG Executive since 1999 and was Co-Chair for two years. Before taking on her new post Marilyn was the President of Mid Island Science Technology and Innovation Council (MISTIC) for seven years. MISTIC is an organization that represents Vancouver Island's emerging technology and value-added industries. The economic development torch seems to have been passed to capable hands following the departure of Tanja McQueen from the position. Tanja was a strong believer in achieving economic success through teamwork and collective efforts. From an EDG perspective, I believe Marilyn shares those same strong beliefs and is perfect for this role.
Marilyn was born and raised on the Island before moving around the province. She relocated to Nanaimo in 1995 and has called it home for the past 10 years. Marilyn holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree in Entrepreneurial Management and has also served at the executive level on many boards and committees promoting economic and business development, science and technology and multiculturalism. Her appointment comes at a key juncture for Nanaimo with the Conference Centre project gearing up, and the work ongoing on the Tourist Destination Marketing Program.
In her new role Marilyn will have two major areas of focus. She is responsible for ensuring there is a strong business climate in Nanaimo and for forming community partnerships to build on the foundation of our thriving economy. EDG is looking forward to working with Marilyn to help her achieve these goals.
The City Of Nanaimo's Economic Development Office is a driving force for economic development in the City. Of course they can't do it along. Together we share the responsibility for ensuring that we take action to enhance Nanaimo's economy. Our collective action will be a significant force for change and will ensure Nanaimo is known as one of the most desirable, livable small cities in North America. |
