Gabriola 101

An Introduction to the Island of the Arts

We're proud of our island - and for good reason. Gabriola has almost everything that almost anyone would need.

Where we are
Gabriola Island is situated a short (about twenty minutes) ferry ride from Nanaimo, British Columbia. Gabriola is one of the Gulf Islands of British Columbia, situated in the Strait of Georgia, between Vancouver Island and the British Columbia mainland.

How to get here
Gabriola is an island, so you will have to get here via ferry, float plane, or your own boat (or the boat of a kind friend!).

One of the Chamber's members (The Haven) has an excellent web page referring to the many ways to get to Gabriola. While you're at that site, take a look at all the programs and facilities offered by the Haven.

Who we are
Known as the “Isle of the Arts”, Gabriola is home to dozens of world renowned and emerging artists, and believed to have the highest density of artists in any community in Canada.

We have a growing population of a bit more than 4,200 people, from all walks of life. Many of us are retired, but many of us are still looking forward to retirement. Some of us are young with children in our elementary school. We are a very welcoming and open-minded group, so you will find all sorts of interesting people as you explore Gabriola.

There are numerous visual and performing artists who call Gabriola home; farmers, barristas, chefs, outdoor enthusiasts...and the list goes on! Most Gabriolans are full-time residents, but there are also a considerable number of people who make Gabriola their "second home" on weekends and during the summer-time. There's always someone to chat to in Folklife Village or at Madrona Marketplace and a great cup of coffee can be had in many spots around the island.

Homes on Gabriola
Although home prices on Gabriola continue to rise, they are still very reasonable, compared to the major areas close to Gabriola. You can learn more about home prices by inquiring with local realtors, by checking MLS web sites, surfing the internet, contacting friends on Gabriola, or driving around looking for "for sale" signs.

Gabriola Georgia Strait Cam
The Gabriola Georgia Strait Cam is located above Locke Bay on the north side of Gabriola Island. The camera overlooks Entrance Island, the Sunshine Coast, the North Shore Mountains and Vancouver. Enjoy the wildlife and marine traffic of the Georgia Strait part of The Salish Sea. The view of the sunrises are truly spectacular. Although we don’t have a view of the sunset, you can watch the Coastal Mountains change colour and the light reflect off the windows of Vancouver.
