Getting Around

We don't have public transit!

You need to bring a car or a bicycle. It's almost 16 km to get from the ferry terminal to the south end of the island by way of South Road. And then there are all the other wonderful main roads to explore: Berry Point Rd, Whalebone, Buttercup and little wandering deadend streets ... Check out the map. A box on the lower left gives a range of distances. Cell phones don't work well on the island. We have one tower (somewhere in the heights above the Gabriola Greenhouse.) and that allows not bad service in some parts of the island. There is another tower at Silva Bay Marina which helps if you are out on the water or near Silva Bay. Those same hills that create a problem for cyclists are at work here too. We have a taxi, which really helps.

If you choose to cycle...

Gabriola is a marvelous place to do it. ...as described on the Info Centre Map "Gabriola Island was made for cyclists! A narrow, paved road (you really need to cycle single file) encircles the island giving the choice of heading south on scenic South Rd. where you can experience the thrill of the steep Brickyard hill which starts a ways past the Gabriola Greenhouse...or...you can take North Rd. which takes you through the wooded, farming area first. According to some local cyclists, the North Rd. route is easiest and probably of medium difficulty. Besides, you can always push your bike up the Brickyard Hill."

New for cyclists and hikers

Check out the big map "Guide to trails on Gabriola Island" in the window at the Mid Island Co-op service station. Pick up a copy of the Gabriola Land and Trails Trust (GaLTT) map for a donation of only $1 at the Visitor Centre at Twin Beaches. To learn more about the Gabriola Lands and Trails Trust, click here.

If you choose to walk...

Check out Brian Grover's travel guide "BC Car-Free", Exploring Sourthwestern British Columbia Without a car. You must now register to access information, but the good news is you then have access to the entire contents of the book, on line. After you register and log in, click on Gabriola Island for a really well written description of a cycle tour on Gabriola. There are a few changes needed but nothing to interfere with a good read and very informative along the way. In fact, the best we've read. Where specific places are mentioned, please verify the information with the Visitor Centre (250) 247-9332 or check the Services section of this web site.
