February 7 GaLTT Trail Work Party
We’ve all enjoyed splashing in puddles and streams when we were kids.  Now is your opportunity to do it for a good cause.  Main Cox Park trail drains a vast area, and tends to meander in the center requiring hops each time it crosses the path.  In the past we have channeled the stream to one side which forms a bit of a ditch.  I hope it rains. There is also a bit of broom growing again at River Place.

Meet at River Place, Sunday February 7th at 1:00, due to some sort of football game on telly. Take Berry Point Road, up  Norwich hill to the end of Spruce St. and River Place on the right. You could also walk up the Cox main trail from Taylor Bay Road, but this way we get to see the famous bridge. Gloves, shovels and a mattock are good.  The GaLTT extractigators will be in attendance.

February 8 Spiritual Cinema Circle presents The Shift
From the creators of “You Can Heal Your Life: The Movie” comes a compelling portrait of three modern lives in need of new direction and new meaning. In his first-ever movie (written by Kristen Lazarian and directed by Michael Goorjian), Wayne Dyer explores the spiritual journey in the second half of life when we long to find the purpose that is our unique contribution to the world. The powerful shift from the ego constructs we are taught early in life by parents and society-which promote an emphasis on achievement and accumulation-are shown in contrast to a life of meaning, focused on serving and giving back.
Filmed on coastal California’s spectacular Monterey Peninsula, The Shift captures every person’s mid-life longing for a more purposeful, soul-directed life.

February 15 HST Q&A with Jean Crowder, MP
The Liberal government in British Columbia is going to implement a new tax beginning on July 1st, 2010. HST stands for Harmonized Sales Tax, and is the combination of Provincial Sales Tax (PST) of seven percent, and Goods & Services Tax (GST) of five percent, into one new tax, HST of 12 percent.

How will this affect the average British Columbian and businesses? Our MP, Jean Crowder, has agreed to come to Gabriola and answer our questions. Information on fighting the HST in BC will also be provided.

February 27 Trades and Services Fair
A Chamber of Commerce and Gabriola Commons sponsored event.

If you work at a trade on Gabriola, this is for you. What will it cost you? Two hours of your time donated, to be Silent Auctioned as a fund raiser for The Commons. What you get - a table at The Commons to display/advertise what you do and to talk to potential customers, as they come in to bid on the cornucopia of donated trade hours and to learn about what trades have to offer on Gabriola.

Is your work classified as a trade? That's not something that is set in stone - if you think of yourself as a tradesperson, then you probably are one. This would cover all construction work, wood and metal work, stone and brick work, garden/yard work, handyman work - and so much more. What about sail-makers and seamstresses?  And of course boat builders, repair people, cob builders, bakers - what about candle-stick makers? You can help us define the term while we organize this event.

If you would like to reserve a table for this event, or to help or participate in any way, please call Heide: 250-247-7384 or email: heidebrown@shaw.ca.

June Top
June 7 - June 11 NCRC 2010
From Monday June 7—Friday June 11th 2010, Gabriola Radio Society (GRS) will be hosting the National Campus Community Radio Conference (NCRC). This premium conference, taking place in a beautiful rural island setting, will be open to all NCRA members as well as anyone interested in expanding their radio skills and knowledge.

Harnessing its experience as host of the NCRC Regional Conference in B.C. in 2003, GRS is creating a week-long “Camp Radio” atmosphere with a total 5-day immersion in all things radio, hosted by experienced radio professionals. Everyone will be there to work: there will be a series of advanced upper level workshops which we fully expect will also appeal to those just beginning their radio careers.  We believe this will be a unique experience for many veteran NCRC attendees and will quickly “bring up to speed” those new to the machinations of the NCRA/ANREC community.

But it won’t be all work and no play. As well as workshop facilities and inexpensive on-site accommodation, the venue provides recreation opportunities that will encourage networking outside the workshop experience.  Camp Miriam is an excellent facility providing on site housing for 100 delegates, wireless access, a commercial kitchen and recreational facilities including a pool and soccer field. Off site housing consists of local hotel and motel facilities, vacation rentals, b&b’s, and some limited local billeting with Island families. Breakfast and lunch are included in the conference cost.

Ideally located just a 20-minute ferry ride from the Vancouver Island city of Nanaimo, Gabriola is the most accessible Gulf Island from the Lower Mainland. Home to 4000 year-round residents, Gabriola has one of the highest concentrations of artists in Canada.  From Juno award winners to National Book prize recipients (and an embarrassment of CBC radio hosts and technicians) this island may well be a tiny a slice of paradise but is no sleepy backwater. GRS will not only deliver top-notch workshops during the day but will also provide an array of high quality entertainment to fill in the off-hours.

For NCRC attendees who wish to stay on for an additional night and two days for a “social weekend” following the conference, accommodation can be provided at the same cost.  Meals will not be provided but cooking facilities will be available. Entertainment will be arranged for the Saturday evening.
