Deborah Dallyn ‘s forthcoming show at The Hive Emporium Gallery is an eclectic look at life in 2017. Engaging with the landscape could be said to be a spiritual act, but now it has become a political one. Governed by these opposing forces, using a wide variety of media, Deborah produces work which is unafraid to look at current issues.
Using items which others have left behind, she manipulates familiar items to give them new meaning. In her ongoing series titled “Rescue Remedies,” she makes use of found wooden travelling boxes. She alludes to the universality of differing religious experience. This is coupled with a collection of finely crafted, witty handmade spoons, as a symbol of good luck and generosity. Boats feature widely in her work, as symbols of our constant drive for new experiences. Also as symbols of hope and, as in ancient times, a way to travel between this world and the next.
In this time when there are more people on the move than ever before, manipulated landscape photographs similarly evoke ideas of never being quite content with where we are, and searching beyond for… who knows what? In this age of uncertainty, Dallyn urges us to look beyond our horizons.
