Tom Gilligan has a new photography exhibit at the Professional Centre. Over forty eclectic images, ranging from abstract to realistic, symbolizing and communicating aspects of the artist’s subjectivity.
I believe that art is symbolic in the sense that the artist creates a tangible representation of her/his inner emotional awareness; A purely subjective and personal awareness that is the origin and bedrock of all art whatever form it may take.
My photographs, whether one calls them realistic or abstract, all contain personal meaning and evoke for me an emotional subjective awareness of creative moments when I was moved by something I had seen in the world or become aware of during the editing of the original photographic image.
Each image selected for this gallery show, whether abstract or realistic in form, is an expression of my own inner awareness. To the degree that they evoke a personal emotional response from you then they serve to connect us at a deeper level than the merely symbolic and I believe that is the great value of all art, including art of the camera.

Rev. Billy, charismatic street preacher & self-appointed leader of the Church of Stop Shopping, urges us to reflect on consumerism, and return to a more authentic relationship to Christmas. He advocates economic justice, targeting unfair labour practices and exploitation of resources for profit.

Come and share a Ceremony of Remembrance, in its second year – at the beautiful setting of the Netloft.
November is a month which seems to be especially set aside as a time of remembrance.
In the Spirit of Remembrance, the Gabriola Ecumenical Society would like to offer an opportunity for all of us who have experienced the loss of those we have loved and cherished to share in this special ceremony.
Family, friend or acquaintance – in our grief we are left with the shadow of their memory, and memory reminds us of their presence in our lives.
In the candlelight, along with the cello music of Allanah Dow, participants can write down the names of persons they would like remembered. Their names will be read out as floating candles are lit and placed in a basin of water.
Allanah will play during this ceremony and will provide interludes for inspiring words of five presenters – as we listen and reflect on those we have lost and cared about deeply.
It can be a very moving experience and we hope that you will join us in helping to “Lift our Spirits” as we share this gathering together.
