Dole Road (East End)
GaLTT and Lions Club
FREE Event | Everyone Welcome!
Scotch broom is a fierce invasive plant on Gabriola, threatening native species in all our open spaces. GaLTT and the Lions’ Club have worked hard over the years to eliminate it, but more work is needed.
You are urged to cut broom in your own neighbourhood and to join the following GaLTT cuts:
- April 25 7pm – near the South Fire Hall
- May 2 7pm – around the village (meet at Agi Hall)
- May 9 7pm – Bertha and Tansy
- May 16 7pm – Dole Avenue (meet at east end)
Our kick-off event for the anti-broom campaign will be on Sunday April 28, noon to 3pm in Drumbeg Park. Lions will provide the BBQ and other refreshments (and their labour!). GaLTT will provide the tools and direction and yet more labour.
We hope that many of you will join our regular volunteers to help eliminate this scourge and free up the Camas lilies to spread through the whole Drumbeg meadow again.
This year we’ll concentrate our work on the top of the meadow near the forest, away from the wild flowers. The smaller broom there can be cut with shears or even pulled if the surrounding soil is tamped down neatly. Larger broom of course will need loppers to cut it at or below ground level to prevent sprouting.
