Arbutus Building Supplies opened in 1986 and has been owned and operated by the Smith family ever since. We are centrally located in “downtown” Gabriola.

Arbutus has friendly, helpful staff with many years experience in the building trade. They are always willing to give knowledgeable advice or recommend contractors for any projects you have planned. There is over 2500 sq ft of interior retail space, 6000 sqft of warehouse and 2 acres of yard space.
We run several delivery trucks, from 1-ton flat beds to a 5-ton crane. Not only do we supply Gabriola, but we work with barge companies to supply Mudge, Decourcy, Valdes and Ruxton as well as other surrounding Gulf Islands.  We provide everything from foundation to roof for new homes, renovations and commercial buildings, working with local architects and attending home shows to find the latest in building trends.

Arbutus has always been independently owned but has recently become part of a larger buying group, by teaming up with IRLY/Timbermart. This allows us to offer competitive pricing and helps us to expand and carry new products. We also continue to deal with many other local suppliers. To ensure we are well stocked and special orders arrive quickly, products arrive to us from Vancouver Island and the Mainland on a daily basis.

Please explore our site to find more information. We look forward to seeing you in the store!

At Dogoda Wooden Creations everything is handmade right here on beautiful Gabriola Island. We are a new woodworking shop, with a small store front attached, that was built in February 2011. Also we are still fairly new to the island, we are a married couple Agnieszka and Peter Blanchard. We moved here from Edmonton almost 2 years ago.

Coming here was a big change, from the climate, to our jobs and our life style. Woodworking just came to us one day. Peter comes from a family of woodworkers so it came to him naturally. We both love working in our shop making everything together. We started with cutting boards, then we moved to spoons and other wooden utensils. We also make wooden dollhouses, which were shown to us how to make by Peter’s dad. We have many more ideas to create in our shop so make sure to check us out regularly to see what is new.

We try to source as much local wood as possible but we do use some exotic species. The exotic woods we use are not endangered species. We only use non toxic glues and natural beeswax mixture finish.

“Dogoda” is a mythological Polish spirit of the west wind, associated with love and gentleness.

Look for our OPEN sign at the corner of North Road and Brydie and stop in and say hello!

Look for us at The Farmer’s Market at AGI Hall starting May long weekend.

Holiday schedule
Beginner Pilates Thursday 9:30
All levels Pilates Thursday 5:30
Private personal training ongoing daily.
Full calendar of Pilates and Dance classes begins January 9th.

Miss Mara and Stu the Glass Guy came to Gabriola from Bowen Island in 2008. They offer a diversity of services to Gabriolans including personal fitness training, Pilates and dance classes, glass repair and farm produce. Call 247-8538 for classes, windows and eggs!

Mara is a BCRPA certified Pilates instructor. The beauty of Pilates is that exercises are adaptable to suit seniors with medical concerns as well as fit athletes. Private and group participants will learn correct breathing, pelvic, spinal, shoulder stabilization and how to strengthen the core and back muscles. The benefits of this practice include firm abdominals, realignment of posture, stronger back, increased strength & flexibility and the alleviation of aches and pains. Group classes run almost daily. Details on the website www.maragoldtheatre.com. Private classes are very popular so call to book a time that works for you. The first private class is free!

After teaching ballet for the City of Montreal Mara moved to Bowen Island where she was a dancer, choreographer and ballet teacher for 10 years. Her view of ballet as an art form resonates with honesty and passion. At Pilates and dance, she encourages the development of strong technique, body awareness, poise, and grace. Young students ages 3-19 are given opportunities to perform in community based events and full scale productions. Dance is a joyful, kinetic experience that encourages skill building, focus, creative thought and an appreciation for one’s self and the arts. Mara’s classes are designed to provide an enriched dance experience in a supportive and safe environment, while also ensuring dancers of every age develop a love and appreciation for dance that lasts a lifetime.

New in January…Adult Ballet – Don’t worry-it’s not scary! These lighthearted classes help the beginner student explore the art of dance in a safe and challenging environment. Mara will guide you through a traditional ballet barre, centre and stretch emphasizing correct placement and encouraging flexibility, while building strength, coordination and musicality. Classes are Wednesdays 6:15-7:45.

The Glass Guy is man for all things glass…window replacement and repair, mirrors, woodstove glass, picture frames, glass shelving and table tops and screens for those hot summer days.

Gera Benoit is on a mission to occupy herself!
Write up courtesy of Kathy McIntyre, GAC

With a “hair straight back” 30 year counselling career under her belt she was feeling burnt out and in need of a little healing - a way to reclaim some of the energy she so freely gave to her work.

About sixteen years ago, as she unpacked moving boxes in Cowichan Bay, she stumbled upon a little easel and some paints she had bought for her son. She just sat down and started to paint. She was amazed! She couldn’t draw, but she could paint! And painting brought out what Gera calls her “full aliveness.”

She adores “in your face” colour and has a deep love not only of nature, but being close to the soul of the earth. For Gera painting is about creating with spirit and letting that spirit paint through her. She might start with simply covering the canvas with paint and will keep layering until something emerges. If she brings an idea of her own to the canvas she says it can quickly feel stale and won’t move. For Gera “movement (with big color) is the bridge that outwardly expresses the aliveness and heart that is present as [she] paints.” These luscious paintings have become Gera’s meditation and the process helps to make her feel whole.

And so…she is creating new space in her life to spend as much time as possible painting. She is inspired daily by her beautiful studio and this community that has so much heart it sometimes brings tears to her eyes. Gera is ready, in her life, to break loose and can’t imagine a better way to do it than to occupy herself.

Jane & Roger arrived in the summer of 1974 after friends told them Gabriola was one of the most creative places they had ever seen and it has proven to be so much more.

Jane loves the interplay of light and colour in working with glass. Her windows cover a range of styles as she pushes the limits by incorporating sandblasting, fused glass and found objects into her designs.

Roger's background as a machinist turns blacksmithing into functional works of art. His gates, hinges and hardware show this. But his quirky nature surfaces in the unusual creatures that adorn the yard and shop.

Come share some fun.

Anita arrived on Canada's West Coast in the fall of 1994, after sailing from Germany in 1993. In the spring of 1995 she brought out her first collection of fine leather bags. Over the following years Indian Summer Leather Design has built a solid reputation for strikingly unusual but functional design and excellent quality.

Anita studied fashion design at the well known Fachhochschule fuer Gestaltung in Pforzheim, Germany. Later she apprenticed with a designer in Berlin for high-end leather apparel.

While all the other famous designers seem to be trampling one another on well worn and crowded paths, Indian Summer Leather Design has developed their own look, combining a European sense of design with West Coast sensibility and a very German penchant for solid quality. Currently they design and handcraft their quality leather bags and accessories in their studio on beautiful Gabriola Island. They are committed to offering the highest possible standards in design and craftmanship and guarantee all their work.

The School

ISBA was founded in 1996 by James Mitchell, on the pristine Gulf Island, Gabriola.

ISBA teaches Timber Frame, Log Building and Fireplace/Stonework; Design, Construction and Finishing skills.

ISBA is the only trade school in BC specializing in teaching both Log & Timber Frame Construction skills for the Owner/Builder and Industry Pre Employment.

They offer Programs, Courses and Skills that cater to a multimillion dollar and growing, Log Building, Timber Frame, and Stone Masonry Industry.

ISBA supplies all the hand and power tools for our log and timber courses. Their authored Instructors teach the most up-to-date methods of wood and stone joinery, with an organic approach to design.

Although most people choose to take the full three-month log and timber building programs, one can also choose just one or two courses to suit their particular need in any of the four disciplines offered.

ISBA's goal is to provide fertile ground for the varied tastes and aspirations of students. ISBA promises to deliver the best, most efficient methods of joining Logs and Timbers together that there is on the face of this world…now that’s impressive!

They also promise that you will have a lot of fun.

The Book

James Mitchell’s just released book “Master’s Guide to Timber Framing” is now available.

Mitchell’s years of knowledge and experience from both building timber frame structures and running the hands-on school, Island School of Building Arts on Gabriola Island, has given readers unique exposure, practical techniques and tried-and-tested methods for the best of timber framing. See their website for ordering information.

Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP) is the currently the fastest growing water sport in the world, and for good reason. We are surrounded by beautiful coastline, sandstone beaches, and an array of west coast wildlife. What better way to explore than on a SUP, and we will be happy to take you!

Island SUP offers LESSONS (both beginner and Advanced) by a Paddle Canada Certified Instructor, RENTALS delivered to your perfect location around the island, and tours to take you to some great hidden spots you may not normally know about… we are even exploring some SUP Yoga options for those who want to add a challenge to their yoga practice! Stay tuned as the weather warms up as we have some great ideas to get you walking on water this spring and summer!

ARTiculEYES Art Therapy
Since coming to Canada 28 years ago I have taught students with special needs, especially children needing extra support to manage problem behaviours.

Almost ten years ago I become an Art Therapist, working with clients ranging in age from 4 to 84 years old in individual, group, school, hospice & private settings, addressing a variety of issues including anxiety, grief, depression, autism, trauma and illness.

Art Therapy is a form of psychotherapy and has broad applications and can be a valuable tool to assist healing. It also encourages creativity due to the process of imagination and the organic nature of the materials. In short it can be a life enhancing experience!

Currently I am counselling part time for School District 68, Nanaimo. I also have a private studio, here on the island working with individuals, with planning currently in progress for groups (both privately and in addition to a new initiative through the Arts Council (updates to be posted). Appointments are also available at my Nanaimo office.

NaturalEYES Photos & Cards
Photography is my favourite creative outlet. I’ve no formal training but have been encouraged by others to pursue photography. Sharing my pictures with others is a satisfying bonus to a process that is both therapeutic and fun. To fund this activity I do sell some of my work, in the form of Gabriola postcards, framed photos, some giclee (printed on  Gabriola) and my latest project, reclaiming old wooden windows as frames - perfect for that wall that needs a window!)

If you are interested in dropping by to see the studio or talk more about art therapy, I would love to talk with you.

Sheila Norgate is an inter-disciplinary artist which just means she does a lot of different things, sometimes at the same time, although not necessarily. She is a painting, writing, dog-crazy feminist who sometimes worries whether there will be enough room left in her life for all the passions she wishes to entertain. As a painter, she is represented in fine galleries across Canada and the Southwestern US and her work is collected internationally. Norgate makes her home on Gabriola where she practices letting herself go.

Lead Guides, Ryan and Hilary Masson, grew up living on Gabriola so kayaking, sailing, and traveling have been a large part of their lives. In 2006 the family took over the Baja Mexico portion of Gabriola Cycle and Kayak and have since been guiding tours in Mexico in the winter months, and out of the Silva Bay Inn in the summer months.

Silva Bay Kayak Adventures offers many programs including:

  • the ever-popular ‘Monday Kayaking and Yoga’
  • Youth Kayaking and Outdoor Leadership Camps - on-going throughout the summer   Sunset Paddles on Monday and Friday evenings
  • Thursday evenings Sailing in the beautiful Barefoot Wooden Boats built here on the island  Day Tours around the Flat Top Islands off Silva Bay
  • Multi-Day Tours and Cottage-Based Tours in the Gulf Islands

In addition Silva Bay Kayak Adventures hosts the annual ‘Gabriola 360’ fun race around the island in August. In the summer months it is common to have at least 70 children/youth from the island and off- island taking part in the Kayaking and Outdoor Leadership Camps. It is so rewarding to see the local kids advancing up the ranks into the Advanced Kayaking camps and planning their own 3-day kayak expedition in the Gulf Islands!

In the winter months Ryan and Hilary guide multi-day kayak tours out of Loreto, Baja Mexico and have had the pleasure of many friends and family going down to paddle in the Sea of Cortez...the World’s Aquarium!  Visit their websites for information on all local summer programs and Baja - the best winter paddling the this hemisphere!

True Blue Spirit – Canada’s Intuitive Living Magazine

In January of 2008 Dorothy Engst was visiting with spiritual medium Carol Spencer. They were sipping tea and chatting when Dorothy said, “I’m going to publish a magazine come September.”

“Oh really,” Carol replied, “and where did that come from?”

“I have no idea.” Dorothy shook her head and chuckled. “But let’s put it out there and we’ll see what happens”.

“Do you know what the magazine will be about?”

“Hmmm…well, it’ll be about spirit I’m guessing.” Dorothy’s response was hesitant.

“In what way?” Carol asked.

Dorothy sat for a moment, contemplating Carol’s question and trying to get a grasp on the direction the conversation had taken. Then it hit her. “You know what? I believe it’s going to be about the journey, about offering different options. Since I’ve been on a spiritual quest, it hasn’t been easy getting answers and information. So that’s what the magazine needs to be about, giving people information and then letting their intuition take them in the right direction.”

It wasn’t until April of the same year that Dorothy started writing about the magazine in her journal. From the moment she did, synchronicities started happening left and right. Writers, editors, interviews, stories…everything came together in spite of moments of doubt and scepticism that often tried to get in the way.

At the end of September the first issue of True Blue Spirit came off the presses and five thousand complimentary copies were distributed across the Vancouver Islands.

Now rolling in to their third anniversary True Blue Spirit has become ‘Canada’s’ Intuitive Living magazine. No longer a complimentary publication (except on Gabriola Island) TBS has joined forces with Magazines Canada. Through Magazines Canada and other distributors the magazine has been launched in over two hundred newsstands and retail outlets across the Country and the distribution has grown to over fourteen thousand copies every issue.

The synchronicities keep rolling along and now they are reaching a larger audience of writers, editors, interviews, stories and avid readers. Sent with love from Gabriola Island to the rest of Canada—True Blue Spirit Magazine. Be sure to look for your copy at Blue Apples, Village Food Market or the Take Outs on either side of the ferry crossing.

For businesses on Gabriola that want to get their message across the Country, True Blue Spirit is a great tool to do so with exclusive ad rates for Gabriola Chamber Members!
